Today in the Writer Spotlight: Children's Book Author Shelyse Pressley!

Tell us a little bit about yourself! How old are you and where are you from? What's something interesting about your hometown?

My name is Shelyse Pressley and I am a mom of 5 and grandmother of 8. I am 59 years old and from Washington D.C. What is interesting about my hometown, the National Museum Of African American History and The Monument are very popular landmarks among other places to go.

Tell us about your books. What inspired you to write them?

My granddaughter inspired me to write these two books. My Hair Is My Crown book is to show young girls that no matter how they wear their hair, it is theirs. It is their very own unique crown. I used my granddaughter's pictures as illustrations for this book. My Melanin Loves Me book lets young girls know that no matter their skin tone they are beautiful. We come in all different shades and that is what makes you beautiful.

How was your journey into publishing? What challenges did you face going in?

The journey was a long process and challenging at times but because of my editor CiCelia of Literary Muse Hub, she made the process easy and smooth. She kept me informed every step along the way. Working with illustrator Shonneri for My Hair Is My Crown she brought my granddaughter's picture to life. We were communicating by email and messenger, which was very challenging.

What advice would you give someone looking to publish a children's book?

The advice I would give is to keep going don’t give up. No matter how hard it may be and no matter how long it takes it will all be worth it. What are a few of your favorite books?

I don't have a favorite book but I like the Alex Cross books by James Patterson.

What do you like to do for fun when you're not working or promoting your book?

When I am not working or promoting my books. I love to spend time with my grandkids. I try to get them one weekend a month. I also crochet, diamond painting, making bracelets, and candles.

What's a fun memory you have of your children when they were younger?

My fun memory with my children, were when they were younger, having dinner and playing games together. Just spending time together.

What's next for your writing/publishing journey? Are any future projects planned?
