Last night I had the pleasure of witnessing Voices in Power and all their poetry glory as they hosted their open mic here in Las Vegas at Taverna Costera. Voices in Power is an international, community open mic powerhouse started by Luis Marrero and based in Philadelphia, PA. They travel to different cities hosting some of the best poets those cities have to offer. The great thing about VIP is that they aren't just an open mic, they are family and they bring that family vibe wherever they go.
It's not just a night of poetry, but games, interactive karaoke, and fun ice breakers for the audience. I had an amazing time watching some of Vegas finest poets perform on that stage. Monarch the Poet and Poetic V were the features for that night representing sin city and were nothing short of amazing as usual. The poets' performances ranged from spoken works about family, growing up queer, the love of mothers, and humorous poems about sex and being a delivery driver. Needless to say, it's never a dull moment when these poets are on the stage.
The hosts of this event, including last night's host Jovan McKoy, bring a memorable energy that you won't find at every open mic. Which I believe sets them apart from others. But don't be misunderstood, this isn't a competition–we love everybody and that's one of the reasons why VIP is so unique in what they do. As a viewer, you are part of the magic that is Voices in Power.
