In The Spotlight Today: Jasmine Herod!

Tell me about yourself! How old are you, and where are you from?

My name is Jasmine Herod, I am a 30-year-old St. Louis, MO native. I lived in Detroit for 2 years as a way to grow professionally but ended up having a personal growth journey that brought me to writing this book and getting to know God and myself at a new level. I graduated from University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2013 with a BS in Biology and Chemistry and chose a career in pharmaceutical sales.

Give us a summary of your book!

Being single isn’t all it’s cracked up to be while living in a tech savvy, filter obsessed society, we are currently in… And especially for women of color. It can feel like all the crap you endure as a single woman of color only happens to you, right? Wrong! You are not alone. Latin, Black, Arabic, and mixed-race women have all endured many trials due to their skin color and the politics, stereotypes, and discrimination that comes along with it. Bittersweet Euphoria shares the stories and discusses topics important to women of color from different backgrounds, upbringings, and religions. This book shows that we are all in this together, fighting battles side by side. Some of the stories featured will make you laugh, and some may make you cry; but at the end of the day, what matters is that we all have self-love, sisterhood, and growth.

What inspired you to write this book?

The inspiration for this book came from me living in Detroit Michigan and having a hard time with dating. As I talked to my black female friends and family about what they were experiencing while dating, I realized that many of us had the same complaints, problems, and frustrations as a single black or women of color. So instead of just complaining I wanted other women of color of all ages to know they are not alone in their frustrations and how they are not just you problems they are our problems. I also wanted to write this book for all women to be empowered through the struggle of dating as a WOC. Because at the end of the day the only person we can control is ourselves and empower each other to be the best versions of ourselves.

Have you written any fiction novels as well? If not, would you and what genre?

No, If I were to write a fiction books it would be a children’s book for young black children to get them interested in mathematics and science professions.

I have never read a book that I didn’t like. Every book that I have read I have always gotten something out of it.

Do you have any other hobbies, or businesses that you would like to share?

I am in the process of organizing a story telling event to be held once a month in St. Louis MO. The event will be based around the importance of mental health through the empowerment of storytelling. The event will be open to the public. People will be able to come and share their dating stories, stories of hard times in their personal and professional lives, and their battles with mental health. The act of sharing/telling in and of itself is empowering. This event is to help crush the stigma that mental health has in the black community as something that should never be discussed and forgotten.
